Entrepreneurs tend to think that a Small Business strategy is not for them. In highly effective businesses, on a scale of one to ten, having a good business strategy rates about an eleven! Writing a business strategy can mean the difference between a lucrative business and you working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week - and not making enough to make ends meet Does this sound like you? Many highly effective entrepreneurs who have a business strategy are not married to their business and make piles of money - often crediting their fortune to having a strategic plan which guides their business. A Business Strategy defines the direction, vision and aims for your whole company. A written business strategy should guide you in, but not dictate, your day-to-day operations. Defining, sharing and communicating a strategy influences and guides operational decisions. The following steps will help you create a strategic plan for your business? 1. First, know what your vision for your company is. In your perfect world, just what your business look like How would you like to be seen by your employees? 2. What are your core values? What are its guiding principles? In other words, why are you in business and how do you do business? 3. Strategy concerns long-term plans. Your strategic is based on the broad objectives that are devised to get from where you are now, to where you want to be. 4. Medium Term Actions. Strategy is about the large scale - long time scale. Your plan must cover short-term operational performance. As soon as you think goals you should also think SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound). Include a list of the barriers that are stopping you from getting where you want to go. Figure out what resources you've already got, and what resources you need to get you past any barriers. And then create an action plan that clearly lays out how you will achieve your goals. Consulting with your staff will deliver much richer solutions. 5. . Create a set of benchmarks. This step is important. Being able to communicate progress to all stakeholders: investors, shareholders, partners, staff, customers and your local community is immensely powerful. 6. Share the plan with your employees, and anyone else who will be involved in the process. The short-term plan from your strategy creates the momentum and direction for your day to day activities. 7. Put the plan into action. Actions speak louder than words. I am not sure how many clichés to use here. The best plan in the world - the best strategy - is absolutely useless without action. 8. Monitor. Just like any trip, you need to check the map every now and then; to be sure you're still on the right road. If something isn't working, the sooner you figure it out and make the necessary adjustments, the sooner you'll be back on track.Prompt corrective action is often more important that the plan itself. 9. Put a process in place so you do the same thing each year. Creating a business strategy and following it will ensure that you enjoy the journey as much as getting to your final destination. You may never achieve the vision developed as part of your strategy. The process of developing that strategy will certainly mean you learn more about yourself, your company and your markets and competition. Armed with the knowledge you are certainly able to cope with, and profit from, the unexpected.
