Spywares do cause damage. Know and kill them fast!

By: Terry Gilfeather

In the virtual universe that the internet is, just like the real universe, good things can be bad. It all depends on how they are used.

Spywares started out not as what it is today. Info about a visitor to the virtual universe is kept and sent through the internet to enable tailoring of the visitor's online experience. That could be a good thing since it potentially can reduce the effort to seek the right kind of info on the internet.

Overuse in that intention, and worse, misusage so that private financial data is extracted without consent, however, the spyware becomes a true devil. The interest of the spyware reverses to evil and instead of trying to enhance the site user's experience, the goal is simply to steal information.

The mid to late 90's boom of the internet or the virtual universe led to a proliferation of spywares and malwares created by evil intentioned programmers. Ignoring them becomes very dangerous since the info stolen are meant to steal money, sometimes in huge amounts.

So anti spywares also boomed. They are created with specific purpose of finding and combating the spywares in the virtual battlefield. They are mostly successful because antispywares are usually created by well coordinated and informed programmers working in established commercial enterprises instead of the usually isolated or badly coordinated programmers creating the spywares.

When spywares are created by equally coordinated and planned programmer groups, however, the major hazards become real. This is more so since the spyware can already cause damage from the time it is released, but anti spyware needs time to identify them and work againts them through good strategies.

Eventually, with the advent of spywares acting like anti spywares, the greatest hazard is created. The evil but skillfull programmers make these especially difficult to fight againts. The innocent internet users stand only to suffer the most.

Understanding spywares and malwares is very important as you join the virtual universe. The best firewalls and antispywares will be broken by newer spywares. Hence it pays for the layman at least to grasp some understanding on this. The technicalities should not make you ignorant. Once you understand at least to some level, you reduce your chance of getting damaged badly.
