The internet has become a virtual universe of its own. Like its real counterpart, good things can be bad depending on how it is utilised. Spywares started when website owners tried to understand the user of the site better. By responding well to the users unique browsing experience, the website owner can make the visit to the site a more positive experience, which is good for the user as well as the site owner. However, when it is overused in that respect and, worse, it is misused to the extent that some private data is also sent out to the internet universe with intent to cause damage, then it becomes a true, evil, spyware. In this case, the creator of the spyware is not interested in enhancing the user's internet experience, but rather in stealing information. The mid to late 90's boom of the internet or the virtual universe led to a proliferation of spywares and malwares created by evil intentioned programmers. Ignoring them becomes very dangerous since the info stolen are meant to steal money, sometimes in huge amounts. The boom in spywares led to a boom on anti spywares also. These are created to recognise and beat the spywares to death. Often they are successful. Because while there are usually uncoordinated efforts in creating spywares, which usually are created by isolated individuals or groups, the anti spywares are created by established programmers working consistently together to find solutions. It is when special spywares are created in a coordinated, well thought out manner that it sometimes become major hazards. The moment a spyware is released to the virtual universe, it can start causing havoc immediately. Anti spywares only come out later after the spywares have led to damage. The worse arrives when spywares which look like anti spywares were created. Created by the most skillfull but bad hearted programmers, these are the most difficult to fight againts especially for the non-technical population of the internet. It is then very important to understand spywares and malwares. Even the best firewalls and antispywares will be broken by newer spywares. This is especially dangerous for the layman who might not understand the technicalities. You may never know what the real threat it and will be susceptible to be damaged badly without effective countermeasures.
