Legitimate link requests to improve your search engine ranking

By: Greg Tomkins

Other website owners are constantly seeking out websites to whom they can set up a link or form whom they can receive a link. Such links increase your ranking in the search engines. In order to attract such links you need to have good content. This is also essential in order to keep the interest of your visitors
Traditionally many sites used email blasts driven by link farms to obtain reciprocal links to their website. Unfortunately many of these resulted in so called "black hat" practices which lead to sites being penalised or worse still, black listed. I would suggest that you stay away from any such offerings, most particularly the free services.
Many people brush off the value of link requests and for some very good reasons. Legitimate requests however, if addressed the right way can very quickly have a positive impact on your page search engine ranking and PR scores. It is well recognised that the proper backlinks to your site are favourably viewed by all search engines.
You shouldn't be dismissive of requests you get from legitimate web owners looking for a link to you or you linking to them. There are however a few easy rules to abide by to assist you out.
1. Check to ascertain if the site is diluted by a multitude of outgoing links and few inbound links. This is particularly important if the outgoing links are unrelated to the site's own content.
2. Check the relevance of the site's content and theme to your own internet site. Unsuitable links do you no favours with the SEs.
3. Don't consent to any request unless you have proved the website's current details and its history. What is being displayed at the domain now may be quite different to what a former owner of the domain had on the web site.
4. Check the relevance of the site's content and theme to your own internet site. Unsuitable links do you no favours with the SEs.
5. Ascertain whether the outgoing links have the NOFOLLOW tage. If they do then you'll get restricted value (if any) by the search engines for such links.
6. Be careful with requests received from any link farming web services that is free. If you wish to these types of services, be sure to pay the subscription and then rigourously apply filters carefully to the sources of any request.
Be prepared for the long haul. Backlink building is not a quick fix solution to optimising your web site. The results will come and they will be rewarding but it will take time. If you are not interested or do not have the time to do this yourself, some SEO specialists provide this service as an addition to their usual SEO services.
Because well ranked websites will invariably receive many requests for backlinks each day you will need to personalise your requests and be sure that they are directed to the individual, not a generic email address. Take some time to research the website identifying who is responsible for maintaining the site and the email address you can use to contact them. Social networks can prove invaluable in doing this and finding such information.
