Know spywares lurking in your computer waiting to cause damage.

By: Terry Gilfeather.

The internet has become a virtual universe of its own. Like its real counterpart, good things can be bad depending on how it is utilised.

Spywares started out not as what it is today. Info about a visitor to the virtual universe is kept and sent through the internet to enable tailoring of the visitor's online experience. That could be a good thing since it potentially can reduce the effort to seek the right kind of info on the internet.

Spyware, however, shows its evil face when it is overused in that respect and worse, is misused with bad intentions. Instead of trying to enhance the user's site experience, private, financial data is stolen and sent out. The goal of the spyware has moved instead to stealing private information.

With the boom of the internet or the virtual universe in the mid to late 90's, spywares also followed booming. Too many spywares and malwares are released to the internet by evil intentioned programmers that it is no longer safe to ignore them since info stolen can and actually be used to steal money to huge amounts.

So anti spywares also boomed. They are created with specific purpose of finding and combating the spywares in the virtual battlefield. They are mostly successful because antispywares are usually created by well coordinated and informed programmers working in established commercial enterprises instead of the usually isolated or badly coordinated programmers creating the spywares.

When spywares are created by equally coordinated and planned programmer groups, however, the major hazards become real. This is more so since the spyware can already cause damage from the time it is released, but anti spyware needs time to identify them and work againts them through good strategies.

Eventually the worst happens - spywares which pretend to be anti spywares are created by persistent bad intentioned programmers. This is the most difficult to fight againts esp for the unsuspecting.

It is then very important to understand spywares and malwares. Even the best firewalls and antispywares will be broken by newer spywares. This is especially dangerous for the layman who might not understand the technicalities. You may never know what the real threat it and will be susceptible to be damaged badly without effective countermeasures.
