Five Key Tools All Website Owners Should Have?

By: Chris Le Roy

The internet is a wash with all the latest gizmos, gadgets and software that website owners should have but there are just a few tools that every website owner should have as a minimum to be successful. Lets take a look at the top five tools -

1. A WordTracker Account

WordTracker is one the first tools all website owners should have, before even purchasing a domain or buying a place to host your website. This tool will allow you to work out which keywords people are using to search for the product or service you intend to offer.

The role of the WordTracker is simply to identify what keywords are being used but also the competition that can be found by using that keyword. Essentially it will tell you all of those websites that are trying to be number one using the keywords you have chosen. Quite often you will find niche markets within WordTracker for your product away from the more generic keyword terms.

We have found over twenty new niche markets where there are less than 10,000 competing websites simply by using the WordTracker Tool. I should note that these niche markets are in one area alone and remember new niche markets are forming all the time.

2. A Great Statistics Package

The cool part about Internet websites is that most quality hosting companies now supply pretty comprehensive statistics packages as part of their hosting packages. If you do not have a statistics package then sites such as Google provide you with a free statistics package called Analytics when you setup your Adwords account.

The interesting thing about the Analytics program is that it will tell you a lot of pertinent information such as where your visitors are company from, where people are exiting and entering your website. The keywords they are using etc.

It is important that you are able to track this information, because if you know that people are visiting your website using certain keywords via search engines then you can be sure your Search Engine Optimisation processes are working.

3. An Easy to Use Web Editor

There are a lot of really good web editors out there. I know a lot of people use Microsoft Frontpage or Expression Web which is the new name for this product. Other people use more fancy programs like Dreamweaver. For new users, the best type of Web Editor is one that is easy to use and can produce simple and easy to read webpages.

My personal preference is to use a combination of Flash with Microsoft FrontPage. These two tools are a good combination and allow you to develop dynamic webpages whilst ensuring you meet the needs of the search engines.

4. Article Submission Tool

The best way I believe to get into a search engine in the keyword area that you want is to use Articles submitted to Article Directories. There are two key reasons why you submit articles to article directories and that is to one, have other like minded people use your articles on their websites and in there blogs and ezines and secondly to drive direct traffic to your own website.

The third reason for submitting articles and this is the major one, is to encourage search engines to provide you with Backlinks to your website using the targeted keywords. However, one of the interesting things my team and I have noticed is that the conversion rate for people who have read my articles to buying is greater than those who come from a Search Engine to my website to buy.

The core reason for this is that when people read your articles you have already built a relationship with them just as I have done with you as you read this article.

5. Photo-Editing Tool

Nobody who is serious about building a true internet business can survive without a quality Photo-Editing tool. Gone are the days when you can simply resize a picture for your website in programs like Microsoft Frontpage and people accept a fuzzy picture. Customers today are way more sophisticated than ever before and demand quality and as such the difference in the photo quality can make the difference between a sale and no sale.

There are many photo-editors available on the market. The most common one in the professional scene is Adobe Photoshop and this is used by all the major magazines around the world. Now the downside to this tool is that you are looking at a cost of around $1,500. If that doesn’t suit your budget then Adobe offers a cut down version called Adobe Photoshop Elements that is just as good, just doesn’t have all the bells and whistles. The average cost of Adobe Photoshop Elements is around $150 for the boxed version. I suspect it is cheaper in places like the United States of America.

One of the other tools, I recommend people look at purchasing is Camtasia. This tool allows you to convert items like Powerpoint Presentations and Video into flash that you can upload to sites like YouTube or use on your own website. Camtasia will set you back around $300 US but what it allows you to do is to create movies using Powerpoint with audio and then provide them online. I know a few companies have taken my articles and incorporated them with Powerpoint slides and then uploaded them to YouTube which has provided them with a new traffic source. I think it is a cool way to get your articles into the market place. I know one of the articles I wrote for an SEO site has had over 10,000 views which I think is pretty cool.

These five tools are the fundamental tools every website owner should have when starting out. These five tools are by no means a definitive list but if you are serious about making money then this is a great starting point.
