But it would be wise to note that foreign exchange occurs whenever one currency is exchanged for another. According to statistics, the most traded currencies in the world are the following in descending order: the United States dollar, the Euro, the Japanese yen, the British pound, the Swiss franc, and the Australian dollar. The sheer size of the forex market is staggering with the largest flows of cash in any financial market worldwide. The players hence are large multinational companies, big banks, states, governments, other financial markets and institutions worldwide. Individual and retail traders only compose a small part of this huge body. Unlike stock markets, foreign currency markets are divided into several levels. At the top are the inter-bank markets, which are composed of the biggest banking and investment firms.
