By: Ray Edwards

Copywriting is essentially the same in every field; the only differences lie in marketing strategies and the medians used to get an ad to an audience. This article in particular will look at how to write successful radio copy.

You must first research your target audience in order to know how they are motivated. Research is one of the most important parts of copywriting no matter what field in which you are writing. If you fail to do your initial research, then you will fail to successfully motivate your audience into buying your product.

You should also talk to the particular station that's going to run you ad. They should be able to tell you what kind of people listen to their station, which will help you tailor your ad to this stations and help you determine which stations are best suited to advertise your product.

You also need to be much more concise with radio ads than with sales letters. This is because you only have a short amount time in which to advertise your product. Therefore a clear and concise ad is required in order to be effective.

Listen to the ads that your competing companies are playing on other stations; this will help you write your ads more effectively. Since each station focuses on a very narrow demographic, listening to other's ad will help you see what is effective to your particular audience. You should then pattern you ads similarly to what you are hearing.

Here are a few quick tips on how to write a good radio commercial. Make sure to tell a story and not just list a bunch of facts; stories keep people's attention where as lists do not. If you're selling a technical product, use technical jargon early on in your ad in order to alert your listeners and cause them to listen to the whole ad instead of just part of it. Testimonials are also very powerful in radio commercials, so try to include them if you can.

Hopefully this article has helped illuminate radio copywriting for you. Listen to different radio stations to see what works. You must also do your research and continually learn about your target audience. And remember, you only have a brief amount of time to get your message across, so you have to learn to write clearly and concisely.
